I was facing down a wasted year at best, Like some cruel and awful cosmic test, And I indulged in solipsistic drunk despair. But when the rage boiled over, and into the streets, I got out of my head, and right up on my feet, And I felt it hanging heavy in the air. We went down to the river from every side, Marching step after step on a path to collide, And the bridges shone with warm resilient light, Then it all stood still for a breath or two, And we saw for a moment all we could do, And we roared from Tillary to 59th I thought this was gonna be a year without a summer; I was wrong Now I’m not sure that I’ve seen one quite so angry, hot, and long I can’t remember when I last felt the asphalt pulse and rise, Wore the souls of my shoes by the end of July Or rolled right on through September feeling strong. Now the days are lonely, we pine and sweat, And we’re feeling our decline, and yet There is no when or where I’d rather be. Than cranking the gears and the bell on my bike, In the first cooling breeze of a new June night, When the West Side Highway parted like the sea. (Chorus) And downtown’s locked down and boarded up, it looks just like the end But the spray paint speaks of something coming just around the bend And at night we light the goddamn sky on fire, like a cry of a defiance from the heart of the mire And then solid walls of steel look fit to bend. Now the first fall days are crisp and nice, But in the back of your mind there’s the snow and the ice, And the haunting memories of things undone. So you stay on the block for as long as you can, Then you hunker and hide and you hope and you plan, To come screaming back next April with the sun. Cause I thought. I thought. IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII... (Chorus) I thought it was gonna be a year without a summer; I was wrong.
